New Year's Rings Up Roses For RV Rentals
Schedule creates demand for more vehicle usage
By Joe Florkowski
UPLAND - The new year is bringing good news for Route 66 Rentals. Because the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl are being held on two separate days, the Upland-based company is banking on the two big events to boost business.
Route 66 Rentals has booked all of its 12 RVs for New Year's and had nearly rented out all of its vehicles for the Rose Bowl, said Emily Mohs, owner. "For motor homes, we're booked and the whole area is booked," Mohs said. "We're just completely booked for New Year's." But because the Rose Bowl is being held on a separate day, people are asking for RVs to travel out to the game, Mohs said. "It starts all over again," she said. Because the Rose Bowl is the national championship game for college football, the parade and game are being held on two separate days. And other recreational vehicle companies are also tapping into that New Year's-Rose Parade-Rose Bowl market. El Monte RV Rentals, which has a San Bernardino location, is expecting nearly all of its RVs to be rented out this weekend, said Joe Laing, marketing director. El Monte has even put a link on its Web site advertising RV rental packages for Texas Longhorn and USC Trojan fans. New Year's Day, the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl are usually big events for El Monte RV but this year it's a little busier than usual because of USC's presence in the game, Laing said. "We haven't done any advertising for this," Laing said. And while the Rose Parade and game are both popular events, RV rentals are also going out for other uses, such as campgrounds, Laing said.
Because of the popularity of New Year's, El Monte encourages people to book RVs ahead of time, he said. People are also renting RVs to head out to the desert, said Mohs with Route 66 Rentals. "Glamis is very popular this season," she said. But renting for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl is usually very popular, Mohs said. People can tailgate before the game or they can use the RVs for sleeping and the bathroom before the parade, she said. While the recreational vehicle rental market is booming, one Ontario-based rental car agency is having an above average holiday for rentals. For this time of year, rentals are a little above average but still not as good as last year, said Amyn Bhimani, district manager for the San Bernardino division of Rent 4 Less. Last year was a phenomenal year at New Year's weekend, he said. Part of the success of last year was that more people were flying, Bhimani said. This year, it has seemed that not as many people are flying, he said.
